Funeral service for Dorine Stone, age 95, of Frederick, Oklahoma, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2019, at the Orr Gray Gish Chapel Rev. Lisa Beavers, First United Methodist Church pastor, officiating.
Mrs. Stone passed away Sunday evening, January 6, 2019, at Memorial Nursing Center of Frederick. Burial will be in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home.
She was born September 2, 1923, in rural Davidson, Oklahoma, to John Thomas and Ora Mae (Ward) Hurley. She graduated from Victory High School in 1941 as Salutatorian. On August 30, 1945, she was united in marriage to James Carl “J.C.” Stone, at her parents’ home near Davidson. She received her bachelor’s of science in Education from Southwestern State College at Weatherford in 1952. In 1963, she obtained her master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. She also attended numerous other colleges acquiring her education including Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, Midwestern University, in Wichita Falls, Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, in Springfield, Texas Women’s University in Denton and North Texas State University, also in Denton. She was a long time educator in Oklahoma and Texas, working primarily as a math teacher and then a counselor. Other communities she lived in, in addition to Frederick include: Sweetwater, TX, Vernon, TX, Richardson, TX. She returned to Frederick in 1971, where she lived until her death.
She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, lifetime member of the Oklahoma Education Association, and a member of the Tillman County Retired Teachers Association. In 1968, she received a Lifetime Professional Certificate while in Richardson, TX. She was a convention delegate for District X at the Texas State Teachers Association in Richardson, she was a member of the Richardson Education Association, Richardson Faculty Advisory Council, Frederick Classroom Teachers Association, president of American Association of University Women, president Beta Rho Chapter of Kappa Kappa Tau, delegate to national Kappa Convention in Springfield, MO, president of Business & Professional Women’s Club and received the National Citation Award, guest speaker on “Modern Math” at Oklahoma Education Association meeting. She volunteered at the Ministerial Alliance Food Bank (now Tillman County Food Bank), and she was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Frederick.
She was preceded in death by: her husband J.C. on September 21, 1966; her son: James Carl “Jimmy” Stone III on March 8, 2007; eight sisters: and Thelma Hurley, Czarina Berry, Fern Wray, Frances Hoyle, Evelyn Moore, Iva Kennedy, Johnnie Mae Humphreys and Wanda Trotter.
Survivors include two grandsons: Jeb Stone and wife Julie, of Richardson, TX, and Charlie Stone and wife Cassie, of Wichita Falls, TX; two great grandchildren: Sasha Stone and Emerson Stone.
