James Wesley Myers

            Funeral service for James Wesley Myers, age 87, of Lawton, formerly of Frederick, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Orr Gray Gish Chapel with Rev. Brent Morey officiating.

            Mr. Myers passed away Friday, June 21, 2019, at a Lawton, Oklahoma, hospital. Burial with military honors and Honor Guard will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Snyder, Oklahoma, under the direction of Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home, of Frederick.

            He was born August 13, 1931, in Burrton, Kansas, to John and Zoella (Tucker) Myers. He grew up and attended school in Burrton. He was drafted in the United States Army and inducted on September 29, 1952, at Kansas City, Missouri. He served during the Korean War as a Combat Engineer and received an honorable discharge on September 10, 1954, at Fort Carson, Colorado. Among the awards he received for his valor and service include: the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal (R O K), Presidential Unit Citation and the National Defense Service Medal. He worked in production in air craft manufacturing. He also worked in the oil field industry. He was united in marriage to Betty Moser on August 3, 1952. She preceded him in death on July 4, 2015. He was extremely active in military service organizations including: American Legion Post 29 (Lawton), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1129 (Lawton), Disabled American Veterans Post 89 (Frederick), American Veterans Post 77 (Frederick) where he served as the Senior Vice Commander, Korean War Association, and associate member of Paralyzed Veterans of American (Midwest Chapter). He enjoyed gardening and watching old westerns. He loved to help with charitable organizations also including the Toys for Tots and the Food Boxes for Tillman County. He loved attending church and attended Bible Baptist Church in Frederick and also attended United Missionary Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas.

            Survivors include two sons: Jody Myers and wife Tammie, Frederick, and Edward Myers, of Lawton; two daughters: Mary Myers and Naomi Myers, both of Hutchinson, Kansas; two brothers: William and Richard Myers, both of Hutchinson, Kansas; and six grandchildren: Wesley, Elizabeth, Victoria, Rebecca, Joseph and Jesse; and numerous great grandchildren.
